Why Visit Berat?

Berat is one of Albania's most beautiful and historically significant cities, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 under the designation "Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra." The city is famous for its distinctive Ottoman architecture — rows of white houses with large windows climbing up the hillside, earning it the nickname "The City of a Thousand Windows" (Qyteti i Njëmijë Dritareve).

Located 122 km south of Tirana along the Osum River, Berat has been continuously inhabited for over 2,400 years. Its castle (Kalaja) is one of the few in the world that is still inhabited, with a community of families living within its walls.

The Historic Quarters

Mangalem (Muslim quarter): The most photographed part of Berat — the dramatic hillside of white Ottoman houses below the castle. This is where you'll find the iconic "thousand windows" view, best photographed from across the river in Gorica. The quarter contains the King's Mosque (Xhamia e Mbretit, 15th century) and the Bachelor's Mosque (Xhamia e Beqarëve).

Gorica (Christian quarter): On the opposite bank of the Osum River, connected by a stone bridge. Similar Ottoman architecture to Mangalem but with churches instead of mosques. The view from Gorica looking across to Mangalem and the castle is Berat's signature image.

Kalaja (Castle quarter): The hilltop fortress area, still inhabited. Contains the Onufri Museum, several churches and a mosque, and panoramic views of the Osum valley.

Berat Castle (Kalaja)

Berat Castle dates to the 4th century BC (Illyrian period) with major additions during the Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman eras. The current walls are predominantly 13th century. Unlike most European castle ruins, Berat's castle is still a living neighborhood — about 300 people reside within its walls.

Inside the castle walls you'll find:

• Onufri Museum: Housed in the Church of the Dormition of St. Mary, this museum showcases the works of Onufri, a 16th-century Albanian icon painter known for his distinctive use of a red pigment whose formula remains a mystery.
• Church of the Holy Trinity: A beautiful 14th-century Byzantine church with original frescoes.
• Red Mosque (Xhamia e Kuqe): Named for the red bricks used in its construction.
• Cisterns: Ancient water storage systems that allowed the castle to withstand sieges.

Entry: 400 ALL (€3.25). The Onufri Museum has a separate entry of 200 ALL (€1.60).

Food & Wine

Berat is situated in one of Albania's premier wine regions. The Osum Valley produces excellent red wines from the Shesh i Zi grape variety and whites from Shesh i Bardhë — both indigenous Albanian grapes.

Must-try dishes:

• Tavë Berati: The local variation of baked lamb with rice, cooked in a clay pot
• Fergese: A Berat specialty — roasted peppers, tomatoes, and cottage cheese baked together
• Pace koke: Traditional sheep head soup (adventurous eaters only)

Wineries: Visit Çobo Winery (10 km from Berat) for tastings of local varieties. Cobo produces award-winning Shesh wines and offers tours of their vineyards.

Getting to Berat

From Tirana: 2–2.5 hours by car via the SH4 highway. Buses depart from Tirana's South Terminal approximately hourly, costing 400–500 ALL (€3–4).

From Vlorë: 2 hours by car. Limited bus service.

From Gjirokastër: 3 hours by car. Combine both UNESCO cities in one trip.

Practical Tips

• Berat is easily visited as a day trip from Tirana, but staying overnight allows you to experience the magical lighting at dusk and dawn.
• Wear comfortable shoes — the castle and old town have steep, cobblestone streets.
• The best photography spot is from the Gorica side of the river, looking toward Mangalem.
• Visit in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October) for pleasant weather and fewer tourists.
