Koman Lake Ferry: How to Book & What to Expect

The Koman Lake Experience

The Koman Lake ferry is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful boat rides in Europe — often compared to the Norwegian fjords but at a fraction of the cost. The 2.5-hour journey takes you through a narrow, winding canyon with steep walls rising hundreds of meters on both sides, through emerald-green water surrounded by dense forests and occasional waterfalls.

The lake is actually a reservoir created by the Koman Hydroelectric Dam, built in 1985. The dam flooded a deep river canyon, creating the stunning waterway that exists today.

The Route: Koman to Fierza

The ferry connects the village of Koman (in the Shkodër region) to Fierza (near the exit to Valbona Valley). The 35 km journey passes through:

• Koman Dam: The start point. You'll see the massive concrete dam as you board.
• The Canyon: Steep, forested walls close in dramatically. At some points, the canyon is only 50 meters wide with walls rising 500+ meters.
• Waterfalls: Several small waterfalls cascade directly into the lake, especially in spring.
• Remote settlements: Occasional houses and small villages accessible only by boat — no roads reach these areas.
• Wildlife: Eagles, herons, and occasionally wild goats on the cliffsides.

Ferry Schedule & Booking

Departure from Koman: 9:00 AM daily (year-round, weather permitting)
Departure from Fierza: 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM (varies by operator and season)
Duration: 2–2.5 hours each way

Operators:

• Berisha Ferry: The original operator. Larger boat, more reliable schedule.
• Dragobia Ferry: Smaller boats, sometimes faster. Operates in peak season.

How to book:

1. Through your guesthouse: The easiest option — guesthouses in Shkodër, Koman, Valbona, and Theth regularly book ferry tickets for guests. Tell your host the day before.
2. Online: Some operators accept bookings via WhatsApp or their Facebook pages (search "Berisha Koman Ferry").
3. At the dock: Show up before 9:00 AM. During off-peak season, walk-ups are usually fine. In July–August, pre-booking is strongly recommended.

Passenger ticket: 600–1,000 ALL (€5–8) depending on operator
Car ferry: 3,000–5,000 ALL (€24–40) — limited car capacity, book well in advance
Motorcycle: 1,500 ALL (€12)

Getting to Koman

From Shkodër: Minibuses depart from the bus station at approximately 6:00–6:30 AM (timed to connect with the 9:00 AM ferry). The 60 km drive takes about 2 hours on a winding mountain road. Cost: 500–700 ALL.

By car: The road from Shkodër to Koman is paved but narrow and winding. 4WD is not required but be prepared for tight corners and occasional livestock.

From Tirana: Take a bus to Shkodër (2 hours, frequent departures), stay overnight, and catch the early morning minibus to Koman.

From Fierza to Valbona

At Fierza, minibuses wait for the ferry and drive passengers to Valbona Village (30–45 minutes, 400 ALL). This connection is timed to the ferry arrival — drivers wait for all passengers to disembark before departing.

Practical Tips

• Sit on the top deck (open air) for the best views and photos. Bring a light jacket — it gets breezy on the water.
• Bring snacks and water. There's no food service on the ferry.
• Charge your phone/camera. The scenery is non-stop spectacular.
• Don't leave Shkodër without confirming your ferry booking. In peak season (July–August), ferries can fill up.
• Plan for the full day. With the early morning start and connections, the Koman–Valbona journey takes a full day.
