# Korçë Travel Guide — Albania's Cultural Capital Korçë sits at 850 metres elevation in southeastern Albania, cradled between mountains on three sides and opening toward the Korçë Plain to the west. The city has long held the unofficial title of Albania's cultural capital — the first Albanian-language school opened here in 1887, the national beer brand was born here, and the café culture rivals anything in Tirana. Unlike the coastal cities that swell with summer tourists, Korçë moves at its own rhythm. The old bazaar fills with locals buying fresh produce on Saturday mornings. University students crowd the boulevard cafés in the afternoon. In August, the entire city turns into a festival ground for Festa e Birrës. ## Getting to Korçë ### From Tirana The drive takes about 3 hours via the A3 motorway through Elbasan, then southeast on SH3. The road was fully resurfaced in 2023 and is in excellent condition. Daily buses depart from Tirana's South Bus Station — the fare is approximately 800-1,000 ALL and the journey takes 3.5 hours with one stop. ### From Pogradec / Lake Ohrid Pogradec is just 40 minutes north along SH3. If you are coming from North Macedonia via Lake Ohrid, cross at the Tushemisht border and you reach Korçë within an hour. Regular furgons connect the two cities for 200 ALL. ### From Greece The Kapshticë border crossing lies 20 kilometres south of Korçë on the road to Kastoriá, Greece. A taxi from the border to the city costs about 1,500-2,000 ALL. ## What to See ### The Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër) Korçë's Ottoman-era bazaar has been restored into a pedestrian quarter of cobblestone streets, craft shops, small galleries and outdoor cafés. The buildings — two-storey stone structures with wooden balconies — date mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visit on a Saturday morning when farmers set up stalls selling mountain cheese, wild herbs, and local honey (500-800 ALL per jar). ### Resurrection Cathedral (Katedralja e Ringjalljes) Completed in 1995, this is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the Balkans. The interior is covered in frescoes painted by local and Greek artists. Free entry. The bell tower offers views across the city and surrounding mountains. ### National Museum of Medieval Art Housed in a purpose-built museum near the cathedral, this collection spans Byzantine icons, silver ecclesiastical objects, and carved wooden iconostases from the 13th to 19th centuries. Some pieces were rescued from churches in Voskopojë and Moscopole that were damaged over centuries. Entrance: 300 ALL. Allow 1-1.5 hours. ### The Boulevard Korçë's main pedestrian boulevard runs about 1.5 kilometres from the Martyrs' Cemetery to Fan Noli Square. Entrance: 200 ALL. ## Day Trips from Korçë ### Voskopojë Thirty minutes south by car, the village of Voskopojë was once the largest city in the Balkans, with an estimated 40,000 inhabitants in the early 18th century. The population fled after Ottoman raids, leaving behind a scattering of churches with extraordinary Byzantine frescoes. The Church of Saint Nicholas has the best-preserved paintings. The road is paved but narrow. Admission to churches is free, though a caretaker may ask for a small donation. ### Dardha A mountain village 25 minutes southeast of Korçë, Dardha sits at 1,350 metres and serves as a winter retreat for Korçë residents. Small ski lifts operate January through March. In summer, hiking trails through beech forests lead to alpine meadows. Several guesthouses serve traditional mountain cooking — try tave kosi (lamb baked with yoghurt and eggs, 600-800 ALL) or flija (a layered pancake dish unique to the region, 500 ALL). ### Lake Prespa About 45 minutes east, Lake Prespa straddles the border of Albania, North Macedonia and Greece. Their grilled lamb chops (800 ALL) are consistently excellent. **Restorant Vila Nënë Tereza**, near the cathedral, offers white-tablecloth dining with a menu heavy on local specialities. A three-course meal runs 1,500-2,500 ALL. **Bufe Liqeni**, at the edge of the Korçë city park, is popular for afternoon coffee and casual meals. Their qofte (meatballs, 400 ALL) and fresh salad make a simple but satisfying lunch. **Bar Republika**, in the old bazaar, draws a younger crowd. Basic but clean, often with home-cooked breakfast included. ### Mid-Range (€35-70/night) Hotel Grand and Hotel Regency are the most established mid-range options, both centrally located. Expect modern rooms, reliable Wi-Fi, and breakfast buffets. ### Boutique Hani i Pazarit, set within the old bazaar, occupies a restored Ottoman building. It is the most atmospheric option in the city, with exposed stonework and a courtyard restaurant. ## Practical Information **ATMs** are readily available on the boulevard and near the bazaar. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants but not at market stalls or smaller eateries. **Weather:** Summers are warm (28-35°C) but drier than the coast. Winters are cold — Korçë regularly sees snow from December through February, with temperatures dropping to -10°C. The beer festival in August is reliably warm. **Language:** Albanian is universal. English is spoken at hotels and by younger people.
