Visiting Kosovo

Kosovo is a partially recognized country in the central Balkans, bordered by Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Despite its complex political status, Kosovo is safe, welcoming, and increasingly popular with travelers. The capital Prishtina has a vibrant café culture, while Prizren is one of the most beautiful cities in the Balkans.

Visa Requirements

Kosovo has a liberal visa policy. Citizens of the following can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period:

• All EU/EEA countries
• United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand
• United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway
• Japan, South Korea, Singapore
• All Western Balkan countries (Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia)
• Turkey

For other nationalities, check the Kosovo Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for current requirements. Visa applications are processed through Kosovo embassies or consulates.

Border Crossings from Albania

There are several border crossings between Albania and Kosovo:

• Morina/Kukës (main crossing): The busiest and most used crossing, on the highway between Tirana and Prishtina. Modern facilities, usually quick processing.
• Qafë Prush (Prizren): Connects to Kukës via a mountain road. Shorter for reaching Prizren.
• Shishtavec/Shistavec: A smaller crossing in the mountainous northeast.

Documents needed: Valid passport or national ID card (for EU citizens). No visa stamp is placed in your passport.

Important note on Serbia: If you enter Kosovo from Serbia and exit to a non-Serbian country (or vice versa), Serbia does not consider this a valid exit from their territory. This only matters if your travel itinerary involves Serbia.

Currency & Money

Kosovo uses the Euro (€) as its official currency, despite not being an EU member. This makes it convenient for European travelers — no currency exchange needed.

ATMs are widely available in all cities (Prishtina, Prizren, Peja, Gjilan). Major banks include: Raiffeisen Bank, ProCredit Bank, TEB. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants but many smaller businesses are cash-only.

Mobile & SIM Cards

Kosovo has its own mobile network (country code +383). Major operators: IPKO and Vala. A tourist SIM with 10GB of data costs approximately €5–8. Purchase at any operator store or many kiosks — just bring your passport.

Note: Albanian SIM cards work in Kosovo with roaming charges. If staying more than a day, a local Kosovo SIM is cheaper.

Getting Around

Tirana to Prishtina: Regular buses (3.5–4 hours, €10–12). The highway is modern and well-maintained.

Within Kosovo: Good bus network between all major cities. Prishtina to Prizren is 1.5 hours (€4). Taxis are affordable — Prishtina to Prizren by taxi costs €25–30.

Must-Visit Places

• Prizren: Albany's answer to Mostar — a stunning riverside city with a fortress, stone bridges, and the Sinan Pasha Mosque. The most photogenic city in Kosovo.
• Prishtina: The youthful capital with Newborn monument, vibrant nightlife, and excellent cafés. Visit the Ethnographic Museum and Kosovo Museum.
• Peja/Peć: Gateway to Rugova Gorge (spectacular canyon with hiking trails) and the Patriarchate of Peć (UNESCO).
• Gračanica Monastery: UNESCO World Heritage Site, a stunning 14th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery near Prishtina.
• Brezovica: Kosovo's ski resort on the Sharr Mountains. Affordable skiing (€15–20/day lift pass) with developing infrastructure.

Practical Tips

• Kosovo is one of the safest countries in Europe for tourists. People are genuinely friendly and hospitable.
• English is widely spoken, especially by younger generations. Albanian and Serbian are official languages.
• Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated (5–10%).
