Everything you need to know about hiking the famous Valbona to Theth trail through the Albanian Alps — route details, difficulty, gear, accommodation, and transport.

Valbona to Theth Hike: Complete Trail Guide

Trail Overview

The Valbona to Theth hike is Albania's most famous trekking route, traversing the heart of the Albanian Alps (Alpet Shqiptare, also called the Accursed Mountains / Bjeshkët e Nemuna). The trail connects two stunning mountain valleys — Valbona National Park in the east and Theth National Park in the west — via the Valbona Pass at 1,795 meters elevation.

Distance: ~13 km (one way)
Elevation gain: ~1,000m ascent, ~800m descent (Valbona→Theth)
Duration: 6–8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate — suitable for fit hikers with proper footwear
Season: Mid-June to mid-October (snow closes the pass in winter)

Getting to Valbona

Most hikers start in Valbona and hike to Theth (the ascent is more gradual from this direction). The classic approach is via the Koman Lake ferry:

  1. Shkodër to Koman: Minibus (departs ~6:00 AM from Shkodër, 2 hours)
  2. Koman Lake Ferry: The stunning 2.5-hour boat ride through dramatic canyon scenery (departs 9:00 AM, arrives Fierza ~11:30 AM). Book through local operators — prices are ~1,000–1,500 ALL.
  3. Fierza to Valbona: Minibus waiting at the ferry dock (30–45 minutes)

Important: Ferry tickets should be booked 1–2 days in advance during peak season (July–August). The ferry operator is Berisha or Dragobia — ask your guesthouse to book for you.

The Trail: Step by Step

Section 1 — Valbona Valley (0–4 km): The trail starts at the end of the Valbona village road. Follow the river through forest and meadows on a gentle incline. Well-marked with red and white blazes.

Section 2 — The Ascent (4–7 km): The trail steepens significantly as it climbs through beech and pine forest toward the pass. Several switchbacks. A small café at the base of the steep section sells drinks and snacks.

Section 3 — Valbona Pass (7 km, 1,795m): The highest point. A flat, exposed area with spectacular 360-degree views of jagged limestone peaks. This is the border between Valbona and Theth national parks. Rest here — you've earned it.

Section 4 — Descent to Theth (7–13 km): A steeper, rockier descent through alpine meadows and then forest. The trail can be slippery when wet. You'll pass several waterfalls and emerge in the Theth valley with views of the iconic Theth church and the surrounding peaks.

Essential Gear

  • Hiking boots: Mandatory. The trail is rocky and steep. Don't attempt in sneakers.
  • Water: Carry at least 2 liters. There are streams along the way but they can dry up in late summer.
  • Rain jacket: Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Even on sunny days, clouds can roll in.
  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses. The pass is fully exposed.
  • Snacks: Trail mix, chocolate, sandwiches. There's one café mid-trail but don't rely on it.
  • Cash: No ATMs in Valbona or Theth. Bring enough ALL for accommodation, meals, and transport.

Where to Stay

In Valbona: Several family-run guesthouses offer dinner, bed, and breakfast for 2,500–4,000 ALL (€20–35) per person. Popular options include Guesthouse Kol Gjoni and Hotel Rilindja.

In Theth: Similar guesthouse setup. Guesthouse Pashko offers excellent hospitality. All guesthouses serve home-cooked meals with local ingredients — fresh bread, cheese, honey, roasted meat.

Tip: Book guesthouses 2–3 days ahead in July–August. October visits may find some closed.

What to See in Theth

Most hikers spend at least one night in Theth to explore:

  • Blue Eye of Theth (Syri i Kaltër i Thethit): A stunning turquoise pool fed by underground springs (2 km hike from village center).
  • Grunas Waterfall: A 30-meter cascade in a narrow canyon. Easy 1 km walk from the village.
  • Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit): A restored traditional stone tower where men in blood feuds would shelter, a unique Albanian cultural artifact.
  • Theth Church: The photogenic stone church with a backdrop of the Albanian Alps — Albania's most iconic mountain view.

Getting Back from Theth

Minibuses run daily from Theth to Shkodër (departing ~7:00 AM, 3–4 hour ride on a partially-paved mountain road). The road itself is an adventure — hairpin turns through spectacular scenery. From Shkodër, regular buses return to Tirana (2 hours).
