# Vlorë Travel Guide — Gateway to the Albanian Riviera Vlorë holds a special place in Albanian history. It was here, on 28 November 1912, that Albania declared its independence. The city wraps around a broad bay where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea, with the Karaburun Peninsula forming a dramatic spine of mountains along the western horizon. Today Vlorë functions as the gateway to the Albanian Riviera. The spectacular Llogara Pass road begins just south of the city, climbing to 1,027 metres before descending to Dhërmi, Himara and eventually Sarandë. Most Riviera road trips start or end here. But Vlorë is more than a transit point. The city has a 5-kilometre waterfront promenade, a lively restaurant scene centred on fresh seafood, and day-trip access to one of the Mediterranean's last untouched marine parks. ## Getting to Vlorë ### From Tirana The drive takes 2 hours 30 minutes on the SH4 highway through Fier. The road is dual carriageway for most of the route and in good condition. Buses depart hourly from Tirana's South Bus Station — fare is 600-800 ALL, journey time roughly 3 hours. ### From Sarandë The coastal road via Llogara Pass is one of Albania's most scenic drives — about 3 hours. Hairpin turns, mountain tunnels blasted through rock, and views that drop vertically to the sea below. Not for nervous drivers, but unforgettable. An enormous Albanian flag flies from a towering mast in the centre of a paved plaza. The Independence Monument — a bronze statue of Ismail Qemali raising the flag — stands at one end. The square is where the city gathers for holidays, concerts and evening strolls. Surrounded by cafés with outdoor seating. ### Independence Museum Housed in the building where independence was declared in 1912, this small but significant museum displays documents, photographs and personal effects from the independence movement. A worthwhile 45-minute visit for anyone interested in Balkan history. ### Muradie Mosque A 16th-century Ottoman mosque designed by the architect Sinan, who also designed the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. Located on the pedestrian street behind Flag Square. ### The Promenade (Lungomare) Vlorë's waterfront walkway stretches about 5 kilometres south from the port toward Uji i Ftohtë beach. Locals walk, jog and cycle here from dawn until late evening. Lined with palm trees, benches and occasional sculpture installations. The sunset views across the bay are reliably spectacular. ### Zvërnec Monastery On a small island in the Narta Lagoon, 10 kilometres north of Vlorë. A 13th-century Byzantine monastery connected to the mainland by a wooden walkway through the lagoon. The setting is hauntingly beautiful — shallow turquoise water, salt marshes, and in spring, flocks of flamingos. A taxi costs about 1,000 ALL each way. No entrance fee. ## Beaches Near Vlorë ### Uji i Ftohtë (Cold Water Beach) Named for the cold freshwater springs that emerge from the cliff face and mix with the sea. Located 5 kilometres south of the city centre, accessible by local bus (50 ALL) or taxi (500 ALL). The beach is pebbly with very clear water. Sunbed rental: 500-800 ALL. Several restaurants sit directly on the beach. ### Radhimë Beach A long sandy beach about 10 kilometres south. More developed, with beach bars, sunbed operators and water sports. Popular with Albanian families. Sunbeds: 600-1,000 ALL per set. ### Jalë Beach Continuing south beyond Radhimë, Jalë is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Albanian coast. Set in a cove surrounded by olive trees. Beach clubs and camping coexist here. Access via a turnoff from the main Llogara road. Sunbeds at beach clubs: 1,000-1,500 ALL. ## Day Trips ### Llogara Pass The SH8 road climbs from sea level to 1,027 metres in approximately 30 minutes of driving. The national park at the top has hiking trails through Bosnian pine forests with panoramic views over the Riviera. Stop at one of the roadside restaurants at the pass for roast lamb (qengj i pjekur, 800-1,200 ALL) and the view. Paragliding operators launch from here — tandem flights cost 6,000-8,000 ALL. ### Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park The Karaburun Peninsula and Sazan Island form Albania's only marine national park. Boat trips depart from Vlorë harbour, typically costing 3,000-5,000 ALL per person for a full-day excursion including snorkelling stops in sea caves, a beach lunch, and a pass by Sazan Island (a former military base now partially open to visitors). Simple, honest cooking. **Fish House Vlorë**, at Uji i Ftohtë beach, is where locals go for fresh fish dinners. Order the catch of the day by weight. A kilo of grilled bream with salad and raki costs roughly 3,000-4,000 ALL for two people. **Cocktail bars** line the promenade toward the south — prices run 400-700 ALL for mixed drinks. The sunset views make up for the occasionally loud music. ## Where to Stay ### Budget (Under €35/night) Guesthouses and apartments in the streets behind Flag Square. Basic but functional, typically with air conditioning and small kitchens. Book through Booking.com or local agencies. ### Mid-Range (€35-80/night) Hotel Bologna, near the promenade, has reliable rooms and sea views from upper floors. Hotel Partner is another solid choice, centrally located with parking. ### Beach Hotels (€50-120/night) Properties along Radhimë and Uji i Ftohtë beaches. Rental agencies near Flag Square charge from 3,000 ALL/day for a compact car. 3. **Morning fish market.** The small fish market near the port opens at 06:00. Fewer crowds than July-August. **July-August:** Peak season, 30-35°C, everything is at full capacity. Book accommodation and ferry tickets early. **September:** Still warm (24-28°C), clearer seas than midsummer, and the beaches start to empty. Probably the sweet spot. **October:** Some beach infrastructure closes, but the city and Llogara remain beautiful. Water temperature still swimmable (21-23°C).
